Work on the Route A relocation at Dutchtown, which involves replacement of a bridge over Hubble Creek, is progressing thanks to unseasonably mild January weather; Penzel Construction Co. of Jackson is building the bridge.

Gov. John M. Dalton's budget recommendations to the legislature carries with them a request for $349,800 under which Cape State College could erect the mathematics classroom wing to the Magill Hall of Science, which was eliminated when the bond funds ran short.
For the first time in many years, no federal funds have been earmarked in the president's budget for Mississippi River flood-control work at Cape Girardeau; presumably this means the gap in the floodwall along the North Main Street stretch of the river won't be closed during the fiscal budget period starting July 1.

The Cape Girardeau City Council last night passed a comprehensive ordinance dealing with all contagious and infectious diseases; an important feature of the new law is the securing of two officials to give their attention to the safeguarding of the public health; a health commissioner with police powers will be appointed to supervise the work of abating nuisances, and a physician will be appointed to take personal charge of the work during times of epidemic.
Peter Bollinger of near Allenville is in Cape Girardeau with other landowners in the drainage district to consult an attorney; landowners who take exception to the assessments of the commissioners must file their protest in the Butler County Circuit Court by Jan. 30.
