Cape Girardeau County Associate Commissioner J. Ronald Fischer is named Cape Girardeau city manager after his unanimous selection by the city council; Fischer, 54, a native of Cape Girardeau, was chosen from among five final candidates.

An anonymous donor has given a piece of property in Sikeston, Mo., to the Southeast Missouri State University Foundation to benefit the $400,000 "Caring for the Future" campaign at the university; the foundation will sell the property and use the funds to finance the renovation and expansion of the nursing building.

1963

Top executives of Armstrong Cork Co. toured the firm's large timber and nursery holdings in Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois and Kentucky, after flying to Cape Girardeau yesterday from headquarters at Lancaster, Pa.; they also viewed Armstrong's extensive acreage between the municipal airport and Diversion Channel.

An explosion in the traffic light control box at Broadway and Pacific Street yesterday evening ripped open the door, breaking the lock on the box and upset the controls; it's believed that an underground gas leak caused gas to seep into the conduit of the light system and a spark from a breaker caused the explosion.

1938

The 20th anniversary of the organization of Red Star Baptist Church is celebrated at the regular morning worship service at the church; several persons who had a part in the organization participate in the program, among them B.F. Burns of First Baptist Church.

Lorimier School, the newest and most elaborate of Cape Girardeau's schools, is formally dedicated in the afternoon; the main speaker for the event is Allen L. Oliver.

1913

The financial condition of Cape Girardeau's public schools is the worst ever known; it was necessary to borrow $2,500 to pay teachers' salaries for November and $1,300 to pay salaries in December; many other bills have yet to be settled.

J.M. Allison and Herman Bremermann are now owners of the Allison Toggery Co.; the company was organized in 1910 and has shown phenomenal growth.
