QUINCY, Ill. -- The Southeast Missouri State University men's basketball team members and others aboard the university's DC-3 aircraft spend some anxious moments when the plane makes a shaky but safe landing after icing up as it approaches the Quincy Municipal Airport; the Indians were en route here for a night game with the Quincy College Hawks.

Saying a plan to build two senior citizen apartment buildings doesn't provide for adequate parking, the Cape Girardeau City Council chooses not to act on a request of a local developer for a special use permit to build apartments adjacent to the main fire station on South Sprigg Street; instead, the council postpones consideration of the request to allow the developer time to draw up a new plan for the project.

50 years ago: Jan. 16, 1960

Ray W. Call, executive vice president for the past 18 months and an employee of the company for 14 years, has been elected president of the Missouri Utilities Co., by its board of directors; he succeeds Harry B. Newman, who officially retired with Call's election.

Removal of an old frame building in the 600 block of Good Hope Street, for many years a grocery store and subsequently used for other business purposes, is underway; the structure, adjacent to the Bierschwal market, is owned by the Blattner estate.

75 years ago: Jan. 16, 1935

Plans and specifications are being made by the Cape Girardeau city engineer for the proposed paving of North West End Boulevard from Normal Avenue north to the north line of Highland Place.

The stock of the Model Grocery, operated by E.O. Happel, was moved overnight to the building at 521 Broadway, formerly occupied by the Bergmann Grocery, which was bought by Happel; Model Grocery formerly was at 701 Broadway.

100 years ago: Jan. 16, 1910

Dies, Frederick Meyer, 77, at his home in Cape Girardeau after a lingering illness; Meyer was born in Hanover, Germany, and arrived in Cape Girardeau in 1851, being accompanied on the same vessel by August Hunze and Christ Lowes, both residents of this city.

J.M. Allison and M.W. Bowman, members of the Glenn Mercantile Co., last week sold their interests to D.A. Glenn and retired from the business yesterday.
