25 years ago: Jan. 16, 1983

After nearly a year without a permanent Newman Center chaplain at Southeast Missouri State University, the Rev. Patrick Wissman began his duties there this week; Wissman replaces the former Catholic chaplain, the Rev. Robert Braun, O.M.I., who served in the position seven years.

Toni's Flower House is set to open Tuesday at 41 S. Sprigg St., in the renovated former quarters of the Carrot Patch; owners of the new store are Cliff and Michele Ford and Don and Toni Zimmer.

50 years ago: Jan. 16, 1958

Two Cape Girardeau boys face charges in connection with 19 instances where houses were entered or articles were stolen from automobiles; the boys, ages 14 and 15, admitted to the burglaries and stealing from cars.

A plan to continue the SEMO District Fair through Sunday this year was adopted by the board of directors of the Southeast Missouri Fair Association last night; the fair will be Sept. 9 to 14; under the proposal, the exposition will open on a Tuesday and continue through the following Sunday; special entertainment on closing day will consist of a society horse show in the afternoon and a Palomino horse thrill show in the evening.

75 years ago: Jan. 16, 1933

Denver M. Wright, off on his second synthetic safari, is en route to Southeast Missouri with two lions in a cage mounted on a truck; his destination is reported to be an island in the Mississippi River south of Charleston, Mo.

R.H. Kleiser, a junior at Teachers College, has bought the Phillips Service Station at Sprigg and College streets from Virgil Wood of Jackson; he intends to continue his studies while operating the station.

100 years ago: Jan. 16, 1908

John Macke, one of the two new policemen who were appointed by the city council several months ago when the whole force was fired for inefficiency, raids a poker game Tuesday night on Main Street; the action confirms Macke's statement that he wouldn't be a tool of the gamblers; Macke arrested five men during the raid of the room above Seagrave's Saloon, next to the Sturdivant Bank.

George Cross and family move to the Rodney property at Main Street and Broadway.
