1989

Dr. Frank W. Braxton is guest speaker at the evening worship service at St. James AME Church; Braxton is associated with Internal Medicine Group here and is head of the departments of nephrology at Southeast Missouri Hospital and Saint Francis Medical Center.

William H. Kuss and James H. Kuss have joined John E. Carpenter as owners of Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel.

1964

The Cape Girardeau City Council calls the special airport bond issue election for Feb. 18; the city will ask voters to approve $1,250,000 in general obligation bonds to finance the city's half of new runway construction and other improvements at the municipal airport.

Promotion of Brig. Gen. Russell Boyt, formerly of Cape Girardeau and now commanding general of the 35th Division Command Headquarters in Jefferson City, to major general in the National Guard has gone to the Senate for confirmation; Boyt is a native of Essex, Mo.; he was commanding officer of Co. L, 140th Infantry when the Guard was federalized in December 1940.

1939

A 350-pound Illinois hog, traveling incognito but apparently looking for greener pastures in another state, comes across the traffic bridge in the evening for a spin beneath Cape Girardeau's bright lights; the toll-taker phones the police as the porker passes his post, and the hunt is on; the hog is finally corralled at Good Hope and Spanish streets by officers and civilians.

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- As the State Highway Patrol moves the last of the sharecroppers off the highways in this area, a many-angled investigation is launched to fix the responsibility for the weeklong strike.

1914

A young woman, Eula Jackson, has been chosen assistant to the Rev. Frank Y. Campbell of the First Baptist Church; she lives at Kansas City, and it is believed she will immediately accept the call and report here about March 1.

Delta will soon get its own name; a petition was recently sent to the postmaster general asking that the post office be changed from Deray to Delta, and it is understood the department is willing to make the change.
