1988

Ollie Amick, who has operated funeral homes in Scott County since 1942, has filed for the 160th District seat in the Missouri House of Representatives; Amick, of Scott City, is attempting to succeed Rep. Betty Hearnes of Charleston, Mo., who is running as a Democrat for governor; Amick also is a Democrat.

The Rev. Amel Shibley of the Society of the Propagation of the Faith signs the deed to land which will be the site of the Cape Girardeau County health department's new facility, near the corner of Linden Street and West End Boulevard.

1963

City limits annexation west to Interstate 55 is requested of the Cape Girardeau City Council in a petition signed by a number of property owners within the proposed new limits; presenting the petition is Charles L. Drury, an owner of the Holiday Inn Motel being constructed at Gordonville Road and I-55.

River interests are keeping an anxious eye on a rising Ohio River as the number of ice floes increases in a falling Mississippi River and the forecast is for colder weather; their general fear is a gorging of the Mississippi from Cairo, Ill., northward.

1938

Frank Batchelor, who served in the office from April 1934 to April 1936, announces his candidacy for the Cape Girardeau City Council; his petition is in circulation.

Workers are remodeling the interior of a room at 328 Broadway in the Marquette Hotel in preparation for the opening of an establishment to be known as Paul's Men Shop, with Paul Piepenbrok as the proprietor; the store will open for business Feb. 1.

1913

The officials of the Cape Girardeau fair association have called a special meeting of stockholders for Saturday afternoon at the Common Pleas Courthouse; the gathering will consider whether to continue holding the annual fairs; bad weather for several seasons have decreased the attendance to such an extent as to leave a heavy deficit; it takes about all the money the association can get hold of to pay the interest on the debt.

The 5-year-old roof on the county courthouse at Jackson is leaking badly again, and much damage is sure to result; not long ago, $500 was spent in repairing the leaky roof.
