25 years ago: Jan. 14, 1987

A federal judge's refusal to bar enforcement of a Missouri law which requires doctors who perform abortions to have surgical privileges at a hospital has done what opponents in Cape Girardeau have been trying to do for years -- stop abortions from being performed in the city; Dr. Bolivar Escobedo is prohibited from performing abortions at the Women's Health Care Center by the ruling.

Bob White, director of the Center for Regional History at Southeast Missouri State University, has been appointed to the Task Force of the Missouri Historical Records Advisory Board by Secretary of State Roy Blunt.

50 years ago: Jan. 14, 1962

During the morning worship service at Church of the Nazarene, the Rev. Stanley P. Storey presents the sermon; Storey, a returned Nazarene teacher and missionary to Guatemala, is on furlough in the United States.

The ice skating period of several days at the lagoon at Capaha Park comes to a close in the afternoon, when rain begins to fall; the temperature is high, but thickness of the ice permits the skaters to keep going until the rain start to fall.

75 years ago: Jan. 14, 1937

Rainfall of nearly two inches early this morning, coming on the heels of the melting sleet and ice, gives the district a flood threat and hampers travel on some state highways in Southeast Missouri; Highway 25 is closed near Dutchtown and Delta.

The stretches of lowland along the western rim of Cape Girardeau appears to be entertaining a diverted Mississippi River, as floodwaters in Cape LaCroix Creek rise to one of the highest stages in recent years; in some places the creek is a quarter of a mile wide, particularly at the Bloomfield Road intersection with Highway 61.

100 years ago: Jan. 14, 1912

Charles A. Gelven, proprietor of Cape Girardeau's greenhouses, is appealing to the public for a mouser; he has a rat that has a fondness for flowers; almost every morning he finds rodents have destroyed two to three dozen carnations.

Vespers and benediction are held in the evening as usual at St. Vincent's Catholic Church; but the Rev. Thomas F. Levan, C.M., pastor, foregoes the usual lecture because of the extremely cold weather.
