Cape Girardeau Transit Supervisor Steve D. Engelmann leaves his job with the city to assume a full-time position with the Missouri National Guard; Englemann helped develop the city's new subsidized taxi system for handicapped and elderly residents.

A proposed $55 increase in student fees at Southeast Missouri State University was discussed yesterday at a public meeting; the increase would become effective in the fall if approved by the school's board of regents this month; incidental fees would climb from $220 to $275 per semester.

50 years ago: Jan. 14, 1957

The Cape Girardeau County Court formally names William Frye as an assistant prosecuting attorney for the county; Stephen N. Limbaugh, prosecutor, says Frye will mainly handle state-county business in magistrate court; Frye is the son of the late J. Grant Frye, who had served as prosecuting attorney.

The mercury dipped to 6 degrees overnight, the coldest reading of the winter; by noon today, thermometers in Cape Girardeau show readings of 19 degrees; single digits are predicted for tonight.

75 years ago: Jan. 14, 1932

Approximately 585 pupils at the Franklin and Broadway schools of Cape Girardeau are examined in a dental clinic; seven dentists -- Drs. H.A. Arnoldi, L.S. Bunch, A.J. Rasche, C.B. Ruff, D.F. Sadler, W.G. Siemers and B.W. Willis -- conduct the clinic.

The men who direct Boy Scout activities in Southeast Missouri meet in Cape Girardeau in the evening and hear a review of what was accomplished during 1931; they also make plans for a greater program in 1932; Rush H. Limbaugh of Cape Girardeau is re-elected president of the district.

100 years ago: Jan. 14, 1907

Wednesday through Saturday of this week, the Turner Art Collection, valued at several thousand dollars, will be on exhibit at Academic Hall; this collection consists of 200 of the most famous paintings of ancient and modern times, many in the exact colors of the originals.

J.S. Schwepker, who has grown old supplying Cape Girardeau with the best groceries to be had, has sold his stock of goods to J.I. Burroughs of West Plains, Mo.; the business will continue at the corner of Main Street and Broadway.
