A wealth of bills pertaining to corrections, probation and parole has prompted the formation of a new Senate Corrections Committee to be chaired by 27th District state Sen. John C. Dennis, D-Benton, Mo.; in addition to Dennis, five other Democrats and three Republicans have been appointed to the committee.

A crowded field of seven candidates has filed for city collector at Scott City, necessitating a March 3 primary election; only one other position, Ward 4 alderman, will be contested in the general municipal election April 7.

50 years ago: Jan. 14, 1956

A decision on whether a bond issue will be proposed to acquire the land needed for the Trail of Tears State Park in Cape Girardeau County awaits a ruling from the attorney general's office on its legality; however, The Missourian has learned that Attorney General John Dalton has said in an unofficial statement that he can see no legal objection to such a plan.

For the second time within a week, the Cole and Web Grocery, 1229 N. Main St., is burglarized in the evening, the thieves making off with $41 in cash, 35 cartons of cigarettes, three cartons of tobacco and a carton of lighter fluid.

75 years ago: Jan. 14, 1931

Sweeping out of the north on the heels of a swirling snowstorm, a strong wind sends the mercury in Cape Girardeau skidding down to 10 degrees; a snowfall of 3 inches is drifted in many places to a much greater depth.

Taking advantage of the cover provided by a blinding snowstorm, burglars last night broke into and looted the Goddard Grocer Co. building, wholesale firm, at 101 William St., of 135,000 cigarettes valued at about $900; this was the third burglary of the building within a 12-month period.

100 years ago: Jan. 14, 1906

The Rev. E.T. Adams, pastor of the Methodist Church, preaches on "The Upward Climb" at the morning service; his topic at the evening service is "Negative and Positive Christianity."

The two-week revival at the German Methodist Episcopal Church ends in the evening; the Rev. O.M. Brinkmann of Appleton has been assisting with the meetings.
