25 years ago: Jan. 14, 1980

The Cape Girardeau County Court has applied for a $250,000 grant from the Missouri Council on Criminal Justice to add 12 cells to the new county jail; the application is being made on the grounds that an expanded jail could serve as a regional jail facility.

William J. Finnegan III becomes the seventh candidate to file for one of two seats on the Cape Girardeau City Council.

50 years ago: Jan. 14, 1955

Cape Girardeau property owners have cause for rejoicing as a result of a reduction in base rates for fire insurance premiums which went into effect Jan. 1; the new rates offer decreases in premiums of 2 to 10 cents per $100 of insurance in Cape Girardeau.

Contract awards totaling $25,909.05 were made last night by the school board for opera seats and stage equipment for the auditorium now nearing completion at the new Central High School.

75 years ago: Jan. 14, 1930

A new cold wave, sweeping out of the northwest, is expected to reach Cape Girardeau late tonight and bring low temperatures of from 20 to 25 degrees to the area by tomorrow morning; there is a chance of snow as well; traffic on some Southeast Missouri highways is already hampered by rising streams that resulted from yesterday's rainstorm.

Henry Haman Jr., president of the Cape Exchange Bank before it merged with the Sturdivant two months ago, goes to St. Louis to take a position with the Savings Trust Co.

100 years ago: Jan. 14, 1905

ORAN, Mo. -- It is said that the Frisco will put on a new night train in the near future; it is also said that the residents of Fredericktown, Charleston and one or two other Missouri towns along the Belmont branch are circulating petitions asking Iron Mountain officials for two night trains, one each way, between Belmont and Bismarck.

Because of the terrible storms throughout the country that have seriously handicapped transportation, the telegraph news service fails to reach The Daily Republican; the newspaper is forced to use miscellaneous news in its place.
