Although federal officials have labeled this winter's flu outbreak as nationwide epidemic, local and regional health officials in Southeast Missouri say flu's major impact peaked here in late December; Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga., reported last week that flu deaths reached epidemic levels in last week of December and first week in January.

Amount of tonnage that passed through Southeast Missouri Regional Port increased significantly in 1991; last year, 48,867 tons of bulk commodities and other cargo moved through port;.

25 years ago: Jan. 14, 1977

Old St. Francis Hospital on Good Hope have been taken over by coeds; hospital building was transformed over Christmas holiday period into dormitory for 50 women students of Southeast Missouri State University; they occupy first, second and fourth floors of building.

Relief from extreme cold, ice and snow comes in form of milder temperatures that help unclog icy streets and improve land transportation; but conditions for rivermen worsen with reports of large buildups of ice on Mississippi River.

50 years ago: Jan. 14, 1952

Gov. Forrest Smith appoints Charles G. Ross Jr. of Caruthersville to Board of Regents for Southeast Missouri State College; Ross, Republican, succeeds late C.D. Matthews III of Sikeston, who was also Republican.

It is announced in Jefferson City that one of series of two-day schools for instructors in fire and police services under civil defense setup will be held in Cape Girardeau, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

75 years ago: Jan. 14, 1927

Jefferson City - Bill No. 1, of Missouri's 54th General Assembly, is introduced in House of Representatives; it is Gov. Sam A. Baker's proposal for separate educational fund for sole support of education in state.

Charleston - Row in congregation of Charleston Baptist church over question of retaining present minister has resulted in withdrawal of 100 members, who will likely form new church with present minister as pastor; minister is the Rev. S.W. Driggers.
