A state highway department plan to improve the Kingshighway and Broadway intersection this year could lead the city to widen a section of Broadway; the city is considering widening Broadway to four lanes from Kingshighway to Clark Avenue.
It appears that dredging which began in 1987 to make the Trail of Tears State Park marina on the Mississippi River usable was a success; despite record low river levels this past year, there is still water in the marina; but Army Corps of Engineers officials caution it will be several years before the ultimate result of the dredging is known.
Dr. William B. Selah, vice president of Central Methodist College at Fayette, Mo., preaches at Grace Methodist Church in the morning; also participating in the worship services is Dr. Frank C. Tucker, chairman of the college's board of trustees.
The Wesley United Methodist Church at Old Appleton was formed recently by combining the Fairview and McClain's Chapel Methodist churches; in the planning stage is a new sanctuary; until its completion, services will be held in the Fairview Church.
NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Approximately 1,200 sharecroppers hold out in makeshift camps along highways 60 and 61 in Mississippi, New Madrid, Scott and Pemiscot counties, as they go into the third day of their "eviction" demonstration; only a handful, tiring of the strike, have broken camp.
Indications are that the Jackson plant of International Shoe Co. will be greatly enlarged in the near future; construction engineers of the corporation were here earlier in the week and staked off an annex on the west side of the present building.
Engineer Barry of the Frisco started staking out the work to be done on the riverfront Saturday; he and his assistant spent the afternoon on the job, and it is supposed that the McMurry Construction Company forces will be here soon to begin making the improvements.
The new dances, tango and hesitation, are creating lots of good times for the young folks, and little informal affairs are getting to be quite the rage the last few weeks.
