The weather man is predicting a high temperature of 15 degrees this afternoon, moderating the bitter cold that has frozen Girardeans the past three days; this morning's low was 3 below zero.

John W. Oliver, a native of Cape Girardeau and now a Kansas City lawyer, has been selected by Missouri's two senators for appointment as federal judge in the state's western district; he would succeed Judge R. Jasper Smith, who died Monday.

75 years ago: Jan. 11, 1937

Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri are engaged in a cleanup to restore broken communications and electric service following the weekend's severe ice and sleet storm; Cape Girardeau escapes the brunt of the storm, and virtually no damage is done in the city.

Mrs. Virginia Hunter Houck, widow of Louis B. Houck, dies at her apartment in St. Louis; she had been in ill health several months and had only recently returned from Colorado, where she had gone in an effort to improve her condition; she was 62.

100 years ago: Jan. 11, 1912

The faculty and students of St. Vincent's College last evening dined and entertained Dr. R.F. Wichterich, honoring him for his most devoted service during the recent illness at the college; Wichterich saved the lives of nine residents of the college, nursing them to health from typhoid fever.

Minnie Wyman of Kennett, Mo., will take over management of the Riverview Hotel on Monday; for about 20 years, she has conducted the Wyman Hotel at Kennett.
