One-two punch of deep snow and sub-zero temperatures have given Cape Girardeau County worst winter weather in recent memory; official low recorded at Municipal Airport this morning shows bone-chilling 18 below zero, only 10 degrees shy of record low set Feb. 13,1899.

Missouri Army National Guard, as has been practice past four years when city streets become slippery, has taken over delivery for Meals on Wheels program at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

50 years ago: Jan. 11, 1952

Use of second floor of Juden Building, 115 Themis, as youth recreation center has been offered Optimist Club, sponsor of Teen Town activities; subject to lease on room now held by Air Force, room would be rented for period of three years at rental of $1 per year.

Extensive remodeling will begin next week on 111 N. Main in preparation for opening in early spring of new shoe store, to be operated by Mr. and Mrs. Norman Seabaugh; Seabaugh's Shoe, Inc., will sell footwear for entire family; building, owned by Mary Barranco, formerly was occupied by Dew Drop Cafe.

75 years ago: Jan. 11, 1927

Payment of 20 percent to depositors of closed Bank of Appleton, second payment since closing of bank two years ago, is announced by W.T. Ruff, special commissioner in charge of liquidation of institution; several months ago, 40 percent payment was approved by finance department, and checks were mailed to creditors of bank.

City officials, wrestling with problem of garbage disposal, have before them for consideration suggestion by several livestock producers in vicinity that contract for collecting garbage be awarded them; according to proposal, they would collect refuse throughout city, if city would give them exclusive contract for privilege.
