Jim and Betty Stricker, who left Cape Girardeau in 1979 as missionaries with the United Mission to Nepal, have returned to here for a brief visit; they shared their experiences recently through a slide presentation at Evangelical United Church of Christ.
County Clerk Rodney Miller becomes the first county official to announce he will seek re-election this year; Miller, who is completing his first four-year term in office, says he will file as a Democrat Tuesday, the first day of filing for political offices.
Indicating approval by the affected communities, no requests for a hearing on the proposed route of the new federal highway in Cape Girardeau County have been received, according to the state highway department; the new road will enter the county on the north at a point west of Old Appleton and follow a southeasterly course, missing Jackson by a mile, crossing Highway 61 near Memorial Park Cemetery and joining the present Highway 61 South near the new Highway 74 intersection.
Mrs. Clarence Vogelsang is the first woman in Cape Girardeau to serve as a bank director; she was elected to the board of directors of Farmers & Merchants Bank this week.
Plans for the construction of a large tabernacle in which regular services will be held have been announced by the Rev. W.E. Hicks, pastor of the Red Star Baptist Church; work on the tabernacle, a frame structure 50 feet wide and 100 feet long, will begin within three weeks.
A St. Louis newspaper reports that the Skouras brothers of St. Louis are negotiating for the purchase of the theaters in this section owned and operated by the Fox West Coast Theaters; the Fox Broadway, as well as two other theaters, are operated by Fox interests.
A railroad engine left the track near the Hely quarry late last evening and turned over, blockading the main line for some time; nobody was injured.
Both streetcars on the Haarig and Main Street lines leave the track at the corner of Spanish and Independence streets in the morning, close upon each other.
