25 years ago: Jan. 10, 1981

Maranatha Ministries, which has been located in Cape Girardeau since 1975, is disbanding its organized fellowship; the group is expected to begin 22 new fellowships across the country this year, according to the pastor, Brad Sherman; he and his family will open a new ministry in Iowa City, Iowa, in February.

Dr. Sheldon Gardner, the second of 12 candidates to enter a race for a seat on the Cape Girardeau City Council, has withdrawn his candidacy.

50 years ago: Jan. 10, 1956

Fred E. Dormeyer Jr., Cape Girardeau architect, has been selected by the school board to design a new elementary school building planned to serve a portion of the Franklin School district.

Meeting yesterday at the courthouse at Jackson, the Cape Girardeau County Republican Committee unanimously selected Freeland L. Jackson as the party candidate for judge of Common Pleas Court, subject to the special election Jan. 24; the county Democratic committee will meet tonight to select its candidate for the post.

75 years ago: Jan. 10, 1931

An agreement is reached between members of the county court and landowners in the vicinity of Whitewater, whereby the latter will sign over right of way to be used for construction of an additional two miles of farm-to-market road from Dutchtown; under the agreement, landowners are donating the right of way, but will receive $1,000 in damages and for fencing to be constructed along the route.

G.W. Schack is appointed as temporary police judge by the Cape Girardeau City Council; the appointment will be effective while Judge F.A. Kage, who is ill, remains off the bench.

100 years ago: Jan. 10, 1906

Wah Lee, who recently arrived in this country from Peking, China, engages the store room formerly occupied by The Daily Republican newspaper in the Opera House on Broadway, where he will install a laundry business; John Kassel, who he is displacing, will move into the Vogel building.

F.M. Kaiser, secretary of the Morrison Ice Plant, has sold his interest in the business to F.W. Morrison, his brother-in-law, another member of the firm; Kaiser has left Cape Girardeau for California, where he plans to reside.
