Jim Beattie, Ward 4 alderman for the Jackson City Council, is the first incumbent to seek re-election April 1; he filed his candidacy yesterday.

50 years ago: Jan. 1, 1961

Fred Dormeyer Jr., of Cape Girardeau has been engaged by Faith Lutheran Church of Dexter, Mo., as architect for its building program, which it is hoped will get underway by early Spring; the congregation was organized in 1959 and numbers 49 communicant members.

The first baby born in Cape Girardeau in 1961 is a son to Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Haupt of Oak Ridge, at Southeast Missouri Hospital at 5:10 this morning; he is named David Jay.

75 years ago: Jan. 1, 1936

Having purchased the equipment of the Bryant Truck Lines of Charleston, Mo., the Potashnick Truck Service takes over the Bryant line and combines it with the business operated by Gene Potashnick; the Bryant line, operating on district highways for many years, had 45 trucks; the purchase gives Potashnick a fleet of nearly 100 trucks.

The Cape Girardeau Board of Adjustment has granted a permit to W.D. Deevers to build a gasoline filling station at the northwest corner of the Morgan Oak-South Lorimier street intersection.

100 years ago: Jan. 1, 1911

Special religious services are held at several of the churches in keeping with the New Year celebration; at Trinity Lutheran Church, the pastor, the Rev. August Wilder, preaches at the morning service on "New Year's Thoughts of a Christian."

Marie Bohnsack entertained a few of her friends last night at a New Year's Eve watch party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Feldhoff on William Street; those present were Frances Selle, Helen Desselman, Vila Derry, Florence Martin, Alice Layton, Antoinette Fuerth, Halter Desselman, Albert Bohnsack, Willie Selle and Otto Bowman.
