McDowell was born Sept. 13, 1907, at Fruitland, son of W.H. and Hettie Noland McDowell. He and Mildred Tant were married Oct. 14, 1928.

McDowell was a retired farmer, and member of First Presbyterian Church at Jackson.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Byron and Kenneth McDowell, Charleston Route 3; two daughters, Martha Boone of Butler, Carolyn Burcks, Charleston Route 3; a brother, Allen McDowell of Fruitland; a sister, Lora Rieman of Jackson; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, and three great-stepgrandchildren.
