CAIRO, Ill. -- Funeral mass for William J. Wolter of Cairo will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jerome Fortenberry will officiate, with entombment in Brooks Memorial Park Mausoleum in Paducah, Ky.

Barkett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wolter, 68, died Monday, July 13, 1992, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

He was born Aug. 31, 1923, in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. He attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated from the United State Merchant Marine Academy.

Wolter was executive vice president of Mound City Marine Ways Inc. from 1946-53. In 1952 he founded Cairo Marine Service Inc., and in 1960 Waterfront Services Co.

In 1982 he founded the Propeller Club, Port of Cairo and served as president, secretary and board member. He was a 45-year member of Propeller Club of the United States, and served two terms as president of the National Propeller Club.

He served four terms as port president of Paducah Propeller Club, and was a member of the Board of Governors of local clubs more than 35 years. He was secretary and regional vice president of the Ohio Valley Region local propeller club.

Wolter was a member of St. Patrick's Church and veteran of World War II. He also was a member of: Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, American Bureau of Shipping, Ohio Valley Improvement Associaiton, National Waterways Association Board of Directors, and Water Resources Congress.

He served on the National River Academy Board of Directors, and was regional vice president of the National Association of Marine Surveyors Inc. for six years.

He is survived by his wife, Ann.
