Willa Clodine Metje, 83, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018.
She was born June 21, 1935, in Cape Girardeau, the daughter of Russell Morrison "Mutt" and Sarah Kathleen "Dickie" Slinkard Wachter. She married Gary Wayne Metje in Cape Girardeau on May 29, 1955, and they shared 63 years of love and devotion. He was by her side as she passed peacefully in their home.
She was a proud employee of J.C. Penney in Cape Girardeau for many years.
An active member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, she also belonged to the Friendship Circle and attended Sunday school and helped prepare church suppers.
Family and friends will remember Clodine as a wonderful, kind and thoughtful lady. If she had your address, you probably received a card from her. She always kept a stock of Blistex and Tic Tacs. She was a collector of angels and drummer boys. She always had a scrapbook (or several) in progress and her family will cherish them for years to come. She was a wonderful cook, and her chicken and dumplings, cheesecake, waffles, ground beef and gravy, bread-and-butter pickles, and sausage and rice are often duplicated but never replicated. She was also a fan of St. Louis Cardinals baseball and enjoyed visits to downtown Cape Girardeau to watch the Mississippi River.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Kim Metje of Staunton, Virginia; a son, Kirk Metje of Cape Girardeau; grandchildren Keri (Josh) Billig of Davidson, North Carolina, Brad (Michelle) Metje of Fishersville, Virginia, Katelyn (Ted) Ivie of Cape Girardeau, Kris (Alli) Metje of Cape Girardeau and Josh Metje of New York; and a brother, Don (Rosalee) Wachter of Arizona. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Jay Billig, Michael and McKenzie Via and Blake, Max, Hazel and Olive Ivie.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Todd Michael Metje, Feb. 29, 2016.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Daniel Johnson officiating. Entombment will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Cape Girardeau.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of love and sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 9370 Olive Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63132. Include "Clodine's Crusaders" in the memo line.
The family would like to extend its appreciation to Southeast Hospice and the in-home caregivers who made it possible for Clodine to spend her final years in her family home.
"If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weaknesses, and all prejudice against my fellow man.
Give my sins to the devil.
Give my soul to God.
If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do all I have asked, I will live forever."
