CAIRO, Ill. -- Walter VanMeter, 69, of Cairo, died Saturday at 3 p.m., March 26, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. CAIRO, Ill. -- Walter VanMeter, 69, of Cairo, died Saturday at 3 p.m., March 26, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born in Karnak, Ill., on March 16, 1925, the son of the late Walter and Beulah Rammage VanMeter. He was a mate for the Valley Line Barge Co., until his retirement.

He was a member of the Cairo Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his brother Isaac VanMeter on March 17, 1994.

He is survived by his wife Elsie VanMeter, of Cairo; two daughters, Donna Story, of Thebes; and Lora Lee Jerman, of Hartford, Ill.; his son, William VanMeter, of Caseyville, Ill., and his sister, Elizabeth Post, of West Frankfort, Ill.

Visitation is at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Monday, March 28. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Cairo Baptist Church until 1 p.m. when funeral services will be conducted with the Rev. Dr. Larry L. Potts officiating.

Burial will follow at the Olive Branch Cemetery at Olive Branch, Ill.

Memorial contributions may be made to Boys Town of Nebraska in memory of Mr. VanMeter.

Barkett Funeral Home of Cairo is in charge of the arrangements.
