W. Calvin Chapman, 68, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at his home following a short illness.
He was born Feb. 5, 1932, at Advance, Mo., son of Walter D. and Anna Hedge Chapman. He and Marilyn Seabaugh were married March 1, 1957, at Cape Girardeau. She preceded him in death March 6, 1995.
Chapman received a bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University, followed by a master's in education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill. He worked in public schools in Fredericktown in 1959 and Berkeley between 1959 and 1961. Chapman came to Cape Girardeau schools in 1961, where he worked as a junior high counselor between 1965 and 1970. He was later overseer of the special education gifted program, as well as district nursing services and counseling. Chapman served as director of special education until he retired in 1991. He was former president of the United Way, campaign chairman for the United Way, captain of the Girl Scouts fund drive, campaign chairman of the Boy Scouts Capital Fund, past president of the Lions Club, former member of the Jaycees and the Southeast Hospital Foundation Board. Chapman started and was chairman of the Braves & Squaws Golf Tournament for 20 years at the Cape Country Club. He was a coach for little league baseball, church league basketball and the Junior Olympics. Chapman also ran camps for underprivileged children. He had been a Sunday school teacher and past board member at Centenary United Methodist Church. Chapman was an Army veteran, serving from June 1950 until September 1960.
Survivors include a son, Chris Chapman of St. Charles, Mo.; a daughter, Karen Chapman of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Kenneth Chapman of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Verna Lee Trickey of Jonesboro, Ark., and Betty Ramsey of Cape Girardeau; three grandchildren, Zachary A. Chapman, Olivia Chapman and Nathan Chapman, all of St. Charles, Mo.; and a mother-in-law, Lucille Seabaugh of Cape Girardeau.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Friends may call at Ford & Sons Mt. Auburn Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. today.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. Clayton Smith will officiate, with entombment at Memorial Park Mausoleum in Cape Girardeau.
