Virginia Hillman

Virginia Swindler Hillman, 85, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Springfield, Mo., daughter of Reyburn and Nellie Price Swindler. She and Dr. John William Hillman were married Jan. 16, 1949, in Baltimore. He died March 6, 1970.

Mrs. Hillman graduated from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She worked as a nurse, caring for the first "blue baby" heart surgery patients with Dr. Alfred Blaylock.

Survivors include four daughters, Mary Hillman Trueblood and husband Dr. Michael Trueblood of Cape Girardeau, Ellen Moore and husband Dr. H.G. of Goldsboro, N.C., Jayne Hillman and Nancy Lacy and husband William of Winston-Salem, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, Jayne M. Cox and Elizabeth M. Hammond of Radford, Va., Sara Moore of Chapel Hill, N.C., Dr. Andrew C. Trueblood of Cape Girardeau, Emily T. Gardner of Kirkwood, Mo., Adam H. Underwood of Apex, N.C., Ellen Bruce of Charlotte, N.C., Laura Underwood, William W. Lacy III, and John H. Lacy, all of Winston-Salem; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, Courtney Price Swindler.

There will not be any services in Cape Girardeau.

A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in Emory, Va., followed by a graveside service at 5 p.m. at Holston Conference Cemetery in Emory. The Rev. David St. Clair will officiate.
