Virgil Clifford Smith, 70, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, March 8, 1995, at St. Francis Medical Center. He was born Aug. 9, 1924, in Olive Branch, Ill., son of Floyd C. and Maddie Mae Smith. He married Donna Jean Kretz. Smith worked for General Sign Co. for 30 years, then operated Smith Neon from 1989 to 1991. He was a member of Eagles Aerie 3775 in Cape Girardeau. Virgil Clifford Smith, 70, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, March 8, 1995, at St. Francis Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 9, 1924, in Olive Branch, Ill., son of Floyd C. and Maddie Mae Smith. He married Donna Jean Kretz.

Smith worked for General Sign Co. for 30 years, then operated Smith Neon from 1989 to 1991. He was a member of Eagles Aerie 3775 in Cape Girardeau. Smith served in the Army during World War II.

Survivors include three sons, Rodney Smith of North Little Rock, Ark., and David and Raymond Smith of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Brenda Maloney of Jackson and Debbie Brinkman of Cape Girardeau; three stepbrothers, Paul Thomas and Charles Thomas of Stockton, Calif., and Joe Thomas of Owasso, Okla.; a stepsister, Katherine Manazel of Hawphorne, Calif.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Cy Smith will officiate, with burial in Lorimier Cemetery. Veterans' graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 3838.
