BENTON, Mo. -- Vernon L. Vetter, 76, of Benton died Thursday, April 14, 2011, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Feb. 2, 1935, in Commerce, Mo., son of George and Alvina Compas Vetter. He and Janet Dirnberger were married Oct. 11, 1958, at New Hamburg, Mo.

Vetter was a lifelong resident of the Benton area. He was a retired farmer and member of St. Denis Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years; two sons, Jim (Christina) Vetter and Jeff Vetter of Benton; two daughters, Vicky (Randy) Hagar of Wake Village, Texas, Cindy (Franklin) Glueck of New Hamburg; seven grandchildren, Rachel Hagar, Adam and Hannah Glueck, Brady and Caleb Vetter, Ashley and Ben Vetter; a brother, Alfred Vetter of Benton; three sisters, Sister Loretta Vetter, OSF, of Joliet, Ill., Rita Drury of Scott City and Mary (Bob) Todt of Oran, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Denis Church. Parish prayers will be at 7.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Michael Casteel and the Rev. Normand Varone as concelebrants. Burial will be in St. Denis Catholic Cemetery in Benton.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Parkinson's Foundation or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Benton is in charge of arrangements.
