BENTON, Mo. -- Vernon Herman "Sheenie" Scherer, 87, of Benton died Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Feb. 27, 1931, in Benton to John and Bertha Enderle Scherer. He and Judy Diane Pattengill married Aug. 15, 1959, in Benton.

He was the owner/operator of the Scherer Grocery in Benton and a self-employed farmer. He was a member of the St. Denis Catholic Church, St. Denis Men's Club, Benton American Legion Post 69 and the Knights of Columbus Council 1111.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipient.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Scherer; two sons, Chris (Donna) Scherer of Kelso, Missouri, and Jeff (Tina) Scherer of Benton; two daughters, Nancy (Bill) Williams of Jackson and Julie (Bob) Schott of Benton; a brother, Bob (Ann) Scherer of Venice, Florida; three sisters-in-law, Libby Scherer of Cape Girardeau, Bev (Ken) Johnson of Cape Girardeau and Melissa Schiwitz of Scott City; a brother-in-law, Gary (Lorna) Pattengill; grandchildren, Megan (Gene) Kerns, Dustin (Heather) LeGrand and Kaylee, Kenzie, Christina, John and Paul Scherer; and great-grandchildren, Baylie and Kora Kerns and Bennett LeGrand.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; two sisters; three grandchildren, Allen, Benjamin and Baby Schott; and a great-grandchild, Emery LeGrand.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at St. Denis Catholic Church in Benton.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Revs. Michael Casteel and Normand Varone as celebrants. Burial will be in St. Denis Cemetery in Benton with full military honors.

Memorial donations may be sent to Missouri Veterans Home, Southeast Hospice or St. Denis Catholic School.
