Verna M. Tidwell, 80, of Cape Girardeau passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at Saint Francis Medical Center. She was born Jan. 15, 1939, in Cape Girardeau County to the late John and Annie Engelmann Ates. Verna married Joe Tidwell on Jan. 17, 1959, in Cape Girardeau. They had one daughter, Linda Tidwell. Verna M. Tidwell, 80, of Cape Girardeau passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 15, 1939, in Cape Girardeau County to the late John and Annie Engelmann Ates. Verna married Joe Tidwell on Jan. 17, 1959, in Cape Girardeau. They had one daughter, Linda Tidwell. He preceded her in death Oct. 18, 2003.

Verna was a 1956 graduate of College High School and worked at Southeast Hospital and Orthopaedic Associates for 30 years, retiring in 1998.

She was a longtime member of Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Church and served on various committees, was a Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. She was a former member of American Association of Medical Assistants.

Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Lester and Laverne Ates; and four sisters, Alene Hale, Elsie Surina, Ruth Deimund and Eula Jones.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

Funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Pastor Fred Burgard officiating. Entombment will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be given to Hobbs Chapel Cemetery Fund.
