Verna Kieninger, 92, of Pocahontas passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. The sixth of 10 children, Verna was born Feb. 8, 1929, near Friedheim to William C. and Ada L. Moeller Kester. Verna and Leslie W. Verna Kieninger, 92, of Pocahontas passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

The sixth of 10 children, Verna was born Feb. 8, 1929, near Friedheim to William C. and Ada L. Moeller Kester.

Verna and Leslie W. "Les" Kieninger were married May 5, 1951, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedheim. They had been married over 53 years when Les passed away Jan. 20, 2005.

Verna was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedheim. After she and Les were married, she became a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Pocahontas. She was a former Sunday school teacher, a member of the Ladies Aid, the Altar Guild, and made many banners for the church.

Verna worked over 10 years at the post office in Pocahontas, retiring in the early to mid-1990s. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, canning and playing cards, especially canasta. One of her greatest joys was being involved in the lives of her grandchildren.

Loving survivors include three daughters, Debbie (Steve) Sandau of Salem, Oregon, and Pat Engelhart and Linda Wooten, both of Jackson; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two siblings, Charlotte Davenport of New Berlin, Illinois, and Truman (Diane) Kester of Rockford, Illinois; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Kester of Cape Girardeau and LaVera Barlow of Dillsboro, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Lynn Kieninger; an infant child; two sons-in-law, Bill Wooten and Dirk Engelhart; and seven siblings.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to service time Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Pocahontas.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Virgil Kelm officiating, followed by interment in the church cemetery. Memorials may take the form of contributions to Southeast Hospice, Zion Lutheran Church or Saxony Lutheran High School.

Arrangements were by McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
