Vergil Williams, 89, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Kerrville, Texas, died Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at his home.
He was born April 14, 1921, in Murphysboro, Ill., to George L. and Rose Smith Williams. He and Dorothy L. Smith were married Sept. 27, 1941.
Williams was a sergeant in the 521st Ordinance Division in Patton's army.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Jean Cunningham of Cape Girardeau, Phyllis Baldwin (Bruce) of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren, Stacy Schott (Jim) of Jackson, Dr. Scott Baldwin (Dr. Melissa) of Redlands, Calif., and Lauren Baldwin of Fredericksburg, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Alec and Rachel Rhodes of Jackson, Collin Baldwin of Redlands; a sister, Evelyn Zimmer of Connecticut; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Norman Williams; and a sister, Eileen Williams.
Crain Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and may be sent to the funeral home.
