Tom Bellis, 86, of Arlington, Va., died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1993, at the Hospice of Northern Virginia.
He was a native of Jay County, Ind. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State University, received a master's degree in physical chemistry from the University of Cincinnati, and a law degree from George Washington University.
Bellis lived in Cape Girardeau from 1924-29, and from 1931-34. He taught chemistry at Southeast in the early 1930s. He retired in 1972 after 38 years with the Food and Drug Administration.
He helped establish standards for certain food items, and had worked in New Orleans, Chicago and Omaha before transferring to Washington, D.C., as an assistant to the assistant FDA commissioner.
He is survived by his wife, Genevieve.
Services were held in Arlington.
