KELSO, Mo. -- Sylvester Benjamin Glastetter, 94, of Kelso died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born June 27, 1922, near Kelso, the son of Paul and Anna Scherer Glastetter.
He married Ramona Frances Blattel, the love of his life, on May 7, 1949. They purchased a home in Ancell, Missouri, and lived there nine years until they moved to their farm in 1957 and then to Kelso in 1981.
Sylvester served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in the 265th Field Artillery Battalion, Battery C. A 240 MM (tractor drawn) Battalion of the 9th United States Army. He served 18 months overseas in battles in north France, Rhineland and Central Europe. Sylvester received several overseas ribbons and a Good Conduct Medal for his services.
He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and its Men's Sodality. He was a founding and lifetime member of the Scott County Historical and Genealogy Society.
Sylvester loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid Cardinals fan and enjoyed playing cards, gardening and farming.
Loving survivors include his wife; a son, David S. (Denise) Glastetter of Cape Girardeau; three daughters, Sharen (Ron) Parker of Cape Girardeau, Karen (Cary) Hou of Arcadia, California, and Ramona L. Glastetter of Jackson; six grandchildren, Kurt David (Stephanie) Glastetter of Brentwood, Missouri, Dustin Paul (Emily) Glastetter of Arnold, Missouri, Ramona Bess Bijoux of Jackson, Louise Maria (Zachariah) Cuellar of Jackson, Ellen (Michael) Green of Sacramento, California, and Maris Elizabeth Parker of Cape Girardeau; four great-grandchildren, Hugh David and Faye Diane Glastetter and Isabella and Zachariah Cuellar Jr.; and three sisters, Coletta Neff of Waterloo, Illinois, Helen Vandeven of Leopold and Bertha Seyer of Dutchtown.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Cornelius John Glastetter; three brothers, William, Louis, and John Glastetter; and three sisters, Delphine Backfisch, Aurelia Muster and Rita Kluesner.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Home in Scott City, with parish prayers at 7 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine Church. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
