Susan Hekmat Lukefahr, 66, of Millersville passed away Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, after a heart attack while visiting friends with her husband in Montana. She left this world suddenly, but her impact on others will continue for years to come.
Susan was born Dec. 20, 1955, to Paul and Gertrude Rustige in House Springs, Missouri. She graduated from Northwest High School House Springs and went on to study at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield. There she met and married the late Firooz Hekmat.
After graduating with a degree in speech and theater from Southwest Missouri State, Susan started her career in education, which lasted an impressive 45 years. She also obtained her Master of Arts in secondary education and teaching from Southeast Missouri State University. She was a passionate educator and spent most of her career as an English teacher at Cape Girardeau Central High School (1986-2006). She retired from teaching, but then held a second career as a special education consultant at Southeast Regional Professional Development Center. In this position, she provided professional development for teachers across the state and helped develop curriculum for special education (2006-2022).
Susan married Darren Lukefahr in 2005 and helped raise two children, Chelsey Trevino and Justin Lukefahr.
Susan had many interests, including her love of the theater, movies, history, literature, the Cardinals, 5Ks and travel. She was an activist for students with special needs, speaking for those without a voice. She was also an advocate for other educators. She will be remembered for her bright smile, exuberant laughter, fashion sense and giving nature.
Susan was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Paul and Gertrude Rustige, and former husband, Firooz Hekmat.
She is survived by her husband, Darren Lukefahr; children, Chelsey (Ryan) Trevino and Justin Lukefahr; grandchildren, Gabe and Kora Trevino; brother, Gary (Pat) Rustige; and eight nieces and nephews. Susan also leaves behind her cherished dog, Maddie.
A celebration of life will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson. The family asks for some time to adjust to her sudden departure until a celebration befitting Susan's joyous character can take place.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MyTeam Triumph of Missouri or Safe House of Southeast Missouri, both organizations Susan felt strongly about.
