Shirley Ann Schmidt, nee Bertrand, 86, of Cape Girardeau passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, at her home with her husband at her bedside.
She came into this world Sept. 27, 1929. Shirley was a lifelong resident of Cape Girardeau County, one of 10 children of Frank C. and Zetta Essner Bertrand.
One of Shirley's favorite hobbies was crocheting. She spent many an hour making throws and blankets for her family and friends. She also enjoyed painting, sewing and tending to her many flowers. The one thing that gave her more enjoyment than anything else was spending time with her seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Shirley and Fred would go out dancing in their younger days. Shirley always said they could cut a rug.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Frederick C. Schmidt. Also surviving are three brothers, Harry, Johnny and Ronny Bertrand, and a sister, Lorraine Eaton, all of Cape Girardeau.
Shirley and Fred have five children, Jim (Debbie) Schmidt of Gravel Hill, Missouri, Carol (Rick) Hendrickson of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, Daniel (Sue) Schmidt of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Connie (Gerald) Flood of Jackson and Cletus (Pam) Schmidt of Fruitland; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank all of those who kept them in their prayers and gave support through this difficult time. It was greatly appreciated.
Shirley touched many lives, and may she rest in peace.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bryan Schaefer officiating. Burial will be at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.
