Shirley M. McDaniel, 81, formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Sunday, May 28, 2017, at SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital in St. Charles, Missouri.
She was born May 29, 1935, in Indian Mound, Tennessee, to Hubert and Maggie Keel Tippit. She and Gary Allen McDaniel were married Oct. 14, 1967, at St. Charles. He preceded her in death May 13, 2013.
Over the years, Shirley had a number of jobs outside of the home, helping to provide for her family, but in her later years, time spent "checking in" on her children and grandchildren became a passion. A quick call to say "I love you" was not uncommon.
She loved to garden (having a greener thumb than most), crochet and sew.
A book was always being read and an old movie always enjoyed.
She was a dear friend to many, especially her siblings, providing a shoulder and advice, and she truly never met a stranger.
Survivors include two sons, Robert (Donna) Sumner of Cape Girardeau and Guy Sumner of Wellsville, Missouri; a daughter, Lisa (Teri) McDaniel-Worden of Sedgewickville, Missouri; five siblings; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; awaiting her first great-great-grandchild; and her constant fur-baby companion, Hannah Faye.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Bruce W. Sumner Jr.; and four siblings.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Pastor Jeff Wilson officiating. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
Memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
