Samuel "Sam" Masterson, 81, of Jackson died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Jackson Manor.

He was born May 8, 1921, son of Duree and Lenora Weltecke Masterson. He and Thelma Owens were married June 30, 1945. She died June 20, 1995. He and Audrey Rodgers Wells were married Feb. 13, 1998.

Masterson served in the U.S. Army during World War II and Korea, retiring as a major Aug. 23, 1962. He then served 18 years in the Civil Service as a budget and systems analyst at the U.S. Air Force Logistics Command, retiring in 1983. He moved to Jackson in 1990 from Fair Oaks, Calif.

He had been a deacon at First Baptist Church in Fair Oaks, and became a member of First Baptist Church in Jackson in 1990.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cathy Masterson of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Joe Masterson of Jackson; two sisters, Pat Davenport and Helen Gohn of Jackson; a stepson, David Wells of Jackson; two stepgranddaughters; and three great-stepgrandchildren.

Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson from 4 to 8 p.m. today.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kevin Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery, with a military honor guard service.
