MOUNDS, Ill. -- Funeral for Sam Frans of Mounds will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Crain Funeral Home in Ullin, Ill. The Rev. Jerry Herring will officiate. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. today, and Wednesday until service time.

Frans, 77, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion, Ill.

He was born July 19, 1923, at Birds Point, Mo., son of Wick and Gracie Ballard Frans. He married Mary Crown, who died in 1995.

Frans retired from Burkhart in Cairo, Ill. He was a volunteer at Smiles in Mounds.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include a stepson, Paul Lewis of Rockford, Ill., and a brother, Floyd Frans of Park Forest, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a brother, a stepdaughter, and a stepson.
