S.A. "Sam" Gunter, 78, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Southeast Missouri Hospital. He was born May 12, 1925, in Charleston, Mo., son of Samuel Adam and Maud Beatrice Martin Gunter. He and Audrey Withers were married July 4, 1945, in Cape Girardeau. She died June 25, 1996...

S.A. "Sam" Gunter, 78, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born May 12, 1925, in Charleston, Mo., son of Samuel Adam and Maud Beatrice Martin Gunter. He and Audrey Withers were married July 4, 1945, in Cape Girardeau. She died June 25, 1996.

Mr. Gunter was employed with Wetterau 25 years, and was director of marketing at the facility in Scott City. He was very active at First Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon, and was currently a member at Lynwood Baptist Church.

He was a member of St. Mark's Masonic Lodge 93 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, Capaha Scottish Rite Club, and was a 32nd degree member of Moolah Shrine in St. Louis. He had been involved with Habitat for Humanity, Little Red House Interpretive Center, and Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include two daughters, Ellen Jean McDowell of Lees Summit, Mo., Gayla Kaye Gunter of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Robert Gunter of state of Louisiana; a sister, Pearl Ferrell of Charleston; and a granddaughter, Leeann Christine McDowell of Lees Summit.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today. St. Mark's Lodge will conduct a Masonic service at 7.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Dr. Derek Staples officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, Lynwood Baptist Church, or Baptist Home.
