Robert Eugene Schaefer, 85, of Scott City died Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born Aug. 3, 1933, in Chaffee, Missouri, to Anton John and Anna Catherine Glastetter Schaefer. He married Almaretta Leona Leible on Jan. 12, 1957.
Robert was a surveyor for the Missouri Department of Transportation. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City and the Knights of Columbus Council 6420 in Scott City. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany in military police.
He is survived by his wife, Almaretta; two sons, Ron (Patty) Schaefer and Don (Angela) Schaefer, both of Scott City; a daughter, Linda Finchum of Phoenix; nine grandchildren, Kristin, Matthew, Lauren, Garett, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Samantha, Sadie and Shelby; seven great-grandchildren, Ellie Shea, Lucas, Kaidence, Emery, Ava Damara, Khakasa and Eleanor; three brothers, Edward (Georgia) Schaefer of Scott City, Anton (Barbara) Schaefer of Columbia, Missouri, and Gary Schaefer of Pilot Knob, Missouri; two sisters, Laverne Owens of Scott City and Georgia Leible of Kelso, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clyde Schaefer.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City. Parish prayer service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, followed by the Knights of Columbus service.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Michael Casteel as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Scott City, with full military honors.
