CAIRO, Ill. -- Robert J. Dean Sr., 76, of Cairo died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at his home.

He was born Nov. 12, 1921, in Cairo, son of Stephen and Louise Meneese Dean.

Dean retired as owner of Bob's Cafe in Cairo. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cairo VFW Post 2649, fourth degree member and treasurer of Cairo Knights of Columbus Council 1027. He was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mae; seven daughters, Martha Dean of Cairo, Linda Peters of Springfield, Mary Smith of Olmsted, Bess Staple and Rosie Dean of Mounds, Nina Turner of Independence, Mo., Donna Dean of Bossier City, La.; two sons, Robert "Bobby" Dean Jr. of Cape Girardeau, Steve Dean of Mounds; a sister, Marguete Love of Charleston; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and sister.

Friends may call at Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo from 4-9 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bill McGhee officiating. Burial will be in the U.S. National Cemetery at Mound City.
