SIKESTON -- Roy Lee "R.L." Newton of Sikeston died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston. He was 76.
He was born Sept. 5, 1921, at Marston, the son of Clarence and Truey Newton Roe. He married Opal L. Fausett on Feb. 17, 1940, at New Madrid. She survives.
He was a member of the Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Sikeston, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines.
He was a truck driver from 1952 until he retired in 1974, working for Complete Auto Transit Co. in St. Louis. He also worked for a number of years in the logging business and operated Newton Distributing Co. until 1985.
He also is survived by two sons, Don and Ron Newton, both of Sikeston; a daughter, Brenda Newton of Sikeston; a sister, Delores Shankle of Portageville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel with the Rev. Gene Tarter of Sommersett, Ky., officiating.
Burial will be at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston.
