Richard Swaim

Richard H. Swaim, 88, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 27, 1918, in Memphis, Tenn., son of George H. and Anne Dickson Swaim. He and Mildred Smith were married April 6, 1941. She survives.

Swaim attended high school in Kansas City, Mo., and graduated from Central Methodist University in 1937. He entered the banking profession in Kansas City at Columbia National Bank where he held several positions until he joined the FDIC as a bank examiner in 1942. He served as vice president and cashier of the Bank of Independence from 1947 until 1958 when he was employed by the First National Bank of Cape Girardeau as executive vice president. He was elected president of the bank in 1961 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1983.

He served in the Army of the United States from 1943 to 1946 and served 26 months overseas in the finance department.

He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer, a member of the administrative council and the chancel choir.

He was the recipient of the distinguished service award for the state of Missouri by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1953 and was president of the Missouri Bankers Association in 1968. He was a member of the Appellate Judicial Commission for six years, a member of Cape Downtown Rotary, a member of the Tower Club, and had a Thursday men's lunch group at the Cape Girardeau Country Club for many years. He is a past board member of Missouri State Chamber of Commerce, past board member of Greater Cape Girardeau Development Corp., past board member of Saint Francis Medical Center, and past member of the Board of Governors of the Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert of Springfield, Ill.; a daughter, Kathy Swaim Boldrey of Sikeston, Mo.; two grandsons, Dr. Andrew Boldrey and Aaron Boldrey, both of Sikeston; a granddaughter, Jenny Keppler of Springfield; a great-grandson, Brady Keppler; and a sister, Anne Fritts, of Sand Springs, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3, 2007, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jeff Long officiating.

Entombment will be in Memorial Park Mausoleum with full military rites by Missouri Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to Centenary UMC or Chateau Girardeau.
