Beloved husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa, Richard P. Sides, 82, of Jackson passed away Monday, April 6, 2020, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Richard's memorial service was initially postponed due to the restrictions/social distancing caused by COVID-19.
Richard was born April 13, 1937, in Neelys Landing to Raymond and Onis Clingingsmith Sides. He and LaDora Bishop were married June 28, 1958, at New Bethel Baptist Church near Pocahontas.
Richard attended Jackson High School. Thereafter, he served honorably in the Missouri National Guard. On March 14, 1956, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines. He was honorably discharged as a corporal March 13, 1958.
Richard worked over 45 years as a self-employed bricklayer, often subcontracting with Bob and Mike Morton. He and LaDora bowled many years in the couple's league at Jackson Lanes.
Richard and LaDora were longtime members of New Bethel Baptist Church, also the church where Richard was saved and baptized, became an ordained deacon and served as church treasurer and usher. Richard and LaDora later joined Shawnee Hills Baptist Church in Jackson. At Shawnee Hills, Richard continued to serve as a deacon and usher and served on the property committee and the kitchen committee.
Since retirement, Richard liked to tinker with his lawn mowers and, occasionally, he and LaDora would take brief getaways and go to flea market sales. His greatest joy was spending time with his great-grandchildren. He loved to play and wrestle around with them.
Loving survivors include his wife of nearly 62 years, LaDora Sides; son, Mark Sides of Jackson; daughter, Leisa (Jack) Floyd of Jackson; grandchildren, Jeremy Sides, Jordan (Ashley) Sides, Sierra (Jesse) Plumley, Erica (Jake) Haff, Aaron (Kirsten) Floyd and Hannah (Roger) Beasley; and great-grandchildren, Tyler, Storie, Sawyer and Tanner Haff, Laikyn Floyd, Abram, Finn and Ronan Beasley, Aiden and Teaghan Morris, and Brinley and Lily Plumley; brothers, Don (June) Sides and Jerry (Linda) Sides; sisters, Zelma Robison, Pat (Wilson) Craft, Shirley Kester and Joyce (Randy) Newell; and many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
