Richard Grundy

TAMMS, Ill. -- Richard Jerome Grundy, 50, of Tamms died Saturday, March 17, 2007, at his home.

He was born Aug. 15, 1956, in Tamms, son of Mattie A. Grundy and Kenneth R. Ford. He and Rose Marie Holder were married April 11, 1998, in Cairo, Ill.

Grundy was a 1974 graduate of Egyptian High School and participated in sports. He holds the record of being the only African-American, All South Egyptian Conference baseball player ever selected from the high school in its 42-year history.

He was employed 28 years at NewPage (Westvaco) in Wickliffe, Ky.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Raven Grundy and Shonqae Taylor of the home, Kamika Williams of Champaign, Ill.; a son, Quentin Hurt of Kankakee, Ill.; his mother of Tamms; father and stepmother, Kenneth and Florence Ford of Chicago; a brother, Kenneth Grundy of Hodges Park, Ill.; four sisters, Patricia Foggs, Angela Heath and Joy Manley, all of Chicago, and Carol Barnett of Makanda, Ill.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of service today at St. John Praise and Worship Center in Pulaski, Ill.

The funeral will be at noon today at the center, with Larry Barnett Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Garden at Villa Ridge, Ill.

Massie Funeral Home in Mounds, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.
