PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Rev. C. William Stein, 87, of Perryville died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at St. Mary's of the Barrens. He was born Feb. 22, 1913, in St. Louis, son of Edward Christian and Florence Strauss Stein. The Rev. Stein was a retired ordained Catholic priest. He professed his vows in 1933 at St. Mary's Seminary in Perryville. He was ordained a deacon at Kenrick Seminary in 1938 and ordained a priest at St. Mary's Seminary in Perryville in 1939...

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Rev. C. William Stein, 87, of Perryville died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at St. Mary's of the Barrens.

He was born Feb. 22, 1913, in St. Louis, son of Edward Christian and Florence Strauss Stein.

The Rev. Stein was a retired ordained Catholic priest. He professed his vows in 1933 at St. Mary's Seminary in Perryville. He was ordained a deacon at Kenrick Seminary in 1938 and ordained a priest at St. Mary's Seminary in Perryville in 1939.

He served in China from 1939 until 1948 and at various churches in the United States and Formosa from 1948 until 1997. He returned to St. Mary's of the Barrens in 1997.

Survivors include nieces and nephews Laurel Tillman, Lloyd Peterson Jr., Paul Peterson, Mary McGrath and Sharon Peterson, and a great-niece, Jennifer Tillman Brooks.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Friends may call from 5-8:30 p.m. Sunday or from 8-10:30 a.m. Monday at Church of the Assumption at St. Mary's of the Barrens. A wake service will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, with burial in Vincentian Community Cemetery.

Young and Sons Funeral Home in Perryville is in charge of arrangements.
