The Rev. William "Bill" Reid, 85, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Lilbourn, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014, at Southeast Hospital.

He was born Aug. 15, 1929, in Pharoah, Oklahoma, to Chester "Check" and Nina Webb Reid. He and Alfreda Vines were married Oct. 14, 1949, in Piggott, Arkansas.

Bill graduated from Canalou High School, Oakland City College, Indiana State University and Lakeland Seminary. He received a master's degree in psychology, a master's degree in counseling and a Ph.D. in divinity.

He served in the Korean War.

Bill was a truck driver in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He was a high-school teacher, college professor, counselor, pastor and chaplain throughout his career. He enjoyed woodworking and horses, and was a member of First General Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Robin and Tonya Reid of Tamms, Illinois; a granddaughter and spouse, Lindsey and Joshua Doyle of Cape Girardeau; a great-granddaughter, River Doyle of Cape Girardeau; a sister and brother-in-law, Ilda and Cal Calvert of Florida; a brother and sister-in-law, Lonnie and Kathy Reid of Danville, Illinois; and a brother-in-law, Robert Wilson of Jerusalem, Arkansas.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Reid and Don Reid; and a sister, Barbara Wilson.

Bill's favorite Bible verse is John 1:1 "In the beginning was the word, the word was God and the word is God."

Bill's life can be reflected in three words: love, obedience, service.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston, Missouri.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. Travis Lambert, pastor of First General Baptist Church of Lilbourn, will officiate. Interment will be in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield, with full military honors conducted.

Pallbearers will be Larry Joe Hamilton, Phillip Hunt, Jonathon Hamilton, Kevin Warf, Richard Kee and Joshua Doyle.
