PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Rev. John Tackaberry, 84, a former chaplain at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at the medical center.
He was born March 30, 1916, in St. Louis. He took his vows in 1935 at St. Mary's of The Barrens in Perryville, Mo. He was ordained in 1941 and served as a seminary professor, usually teaching Latin, for the next 39 years in the dioceses of Chicago, Houston, Kansas City, St. Louis, San Antonio and Springfield-Cape Girardeau.
He taught at St. Louis Prep Seminary South from 1948 to 1952. From 1952 to 1955 he was the rector of St. John's Seminary in San Antonio, Texas. He retired from teaching in 1979 to serve at the Evangelization Center in Cape Girardeau and as chaplain at the medical center. He was active in the Marriage Encounter movement.
He retired to St. Mary's in 1990.
Survivors include two nieces, Monica Roach of St. Louis and Margaret Wheaton of Mehlville, Mo.; and a nephew, Daniel Kelly of Tucson, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
A wake will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Church of St. Mary's of The Barrens in Perryville.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be at the community cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Miller Family Funeral Home in Perryville.
