The Rev. Herbert Hirschfeld, 92, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at his home.
He was born March 21, 1909, in Alt Rokin, East Germany, son of Rudolf and Pauline Mundt Hirschfeld. He and Anastasia Kosiuk were married Sept. 6, 1936.
Herbert received his college degree in Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine) and continued graduate studies in theology in Lodz, Poland, Hamburg, Germany, and later in Suffolks, S.D.
He served as a Baptist minister in four different churches in Germany: Lucinow, Nordenburg, Ditzumer-Verlat and Elisabeth Fehn.
Herbert immigrated to the United States in 1951 with his family. They settled in Chicago (Forest Park) for 25 years, before retiring to Cape Girardeau in 1976. He served as a visiting pastor to numerous German Baptist communities throughout the Chicago area and in Michigan.
He and his wife moved to Chateau Girardeau in 1994.
Survivors include his wife, Anastasia, of 65 years; two sons and daughters-in-law, George and Mary Hirschfield and Ted and Margaret Hirschfield, all of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; grandchildren, Ann Hirschfield of Perryville, Mo., Grace and Martin Trendel of Chicago, Winkle and Jovan Ilic of Knoxville, Tenn., Lynn Colby of Chicago, Glenn Engstrom of Seattle, Wash.; and a half brother, Alfred Hauk and wife Hiltraut of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Herbert followed his two younger brothers, Otto and Leonard Hirschfeld, who passed away last year in Edmonton.
He chose to donate his body to medical research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
A memorial service will be announced in a few weeks for family and friends.
