Reuben Dickenson III

Reuben Dabney Dickenson III, 89, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, May 21, 2012, at the Missouri Veterans Home, his home the past 12 years.

He was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Christian County, Ky., to Reuben Dabney and Julia Della Hopson Dickenson II.

Reuben was a graduate of Pembroke High School in Christian County.

He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an aviation machinist mate 3rd Class; and received several service awards. His service is detailed in the U.S. World War II Memorial Registry, available at http://wwiimemorial.com.

Reuben and Una Maizola "Maizie" Witty were married March 20, 1959, in Woodbury, Tenn.

He lived and worked on his family's Kentucky farm many years, and later owned a Western Auto store in Greenbrier, Tenn. Other work included jobs in manufacturing as well as a house parent and maintenance technician several years at Potter Children's Home in Bowling Green, Ky. While in Bowling Green he was a member of University, Delafield and Lehman Avenue Churches of Christ.

He moved to Sikeston, Mo., in 1999 and was a member of Shady Acres Church of Christ. He moved to the Missouri Veterans Home in 2000. He was a member of Jackson Church of Christ in Jackson.

Survivors include three sons, Reuben Dabney Dickenson IV (Laura) of Brentwood, Tenn., Robert Daniel Dickenson (Liz) of Baton Rouge, La., Randy Dale Dickenson (Christine) of O'Fallon, Ill.; a daughter, Deanna Dickenson Finch of Cape Girardeau; two sisters, Anna Lowe of Hopkinsville, Ky., Dell Eaton of Pembroke, Ky.; and eight grandchildren, Julia, Reuben Dabney V, Russell, Sam, Eva, Daniel, Rachel and Tyler Dickenson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Una Maizola Dickenson; his parents; and a sister, Arlene Taylor.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jackson Church of Christ and 1 p.m. to service time Saturday at Maddux Funeral Home in Pembroke.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Maddux Funeral Home, with Edd Sterchi officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery in Pembroke, with military rites to be conducted.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. Maddux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements in Kentucky.
