Raymond Henry Vogel Jr., 57, of Durham, N.C., died suddenly Monday, April 2, 2007, at his home.
He was born Nov. 15, 1949, in Cape Girardeau, son of Raymond and Rosalind Vogel.
Vogel received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1971.
He worked 12 years for the District of Jefferson County Air Pollution Control Division in Louisville, Ky. He had more than 25 years of service as an environmental engineer at EPA's Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards in Research Triangle Park.
He played a significant role in developing the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and implementing that act's permitting program for industrial sources. He was widely respected for his work assisting state and local air agencies around the nation.
He was a pianist, and in Louisville had a band called "Easter Island." Recently he performed regularly with "Luna Tunes," a band composed of EPA employees. He arranged songs with his sister.
Survivors include a son, Adrian Gerth Vogel; his father, Raymond H. Vogel; a sister, Marta, and a brother, Jonathon.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
A memorial service was held Saturday in Durham.
