McCLURE, Ill. -- Raymond E. Nunnery, 83, of McClure passed away Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Jan. 14, 1934, in Denton, Missouri, to Nathaniel and Nora Waldrop Nunnery.
He served during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force.
He received a bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University in 1959.
He spent several years in the insurance business, owning his own adjusting company. He also worked at the Purple Crackle for 25 years and was known as "Big Ray."
Ray enjoyed spending time camping, fishing and playing poker with anyone who wanted to share a laugh. He never met a stranger and would give you the shirt off his back.
Survivors include his three sons, Dale (Pam) Nunnery of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Steve (Carol) Nunnery of Cape Girardeau and John Nunnery of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one sister, Natalie Smith of Evans, Georgia; and four grandchildren, Benjamin, Nathan and Derek Nunnery and Laura (Ryan) Love; one great-grandson, Crispin Love; and Jaimie Lynn of Jackson, who he raised as his daughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
